A Dublin native who now calls Berlin home, Adam brings a diverse musical background to his performances. From being raised on everything from classical and choral music to blues, jazz, and soul, Adam's musical upbringing was a melting pot of influences from both sides of the family.
Before taking to Radio and DJing, Adam predominantly performed in various bands In Ireland. As a drummer and bass player, percussive rhythms and grooves are the essence of his playing and selections. This foundation in live music results in sets that are unique and filled with a blend of live and instruments and electronic sounds guaranteed to move you.
As the host of HotWHeels on Refuge Worldwide and founder of a throwing Shapes, a Berlin based record club and non-profit party series, Adam curates shows and events that are designed with the purpose of informing, connecting people and telling stories through music.
No matter the genre or the setting, I always ends up juggling between organic and spacious sounds, to get grounded in earth's energy or floating away, to get people in their feelings as much as to make them dance.
Inspired by the intricate beauty, complexity and subtlety of the natural world, this universe paints a picture full of textures, colors, movements, playing with pressure and space to make the body move to deeper layers.
Of course I know how special of a space pos can be and would like to try to get as close as possible to the purest form of playing music. Keeping the musical universe in mind and creating a story that lives in that universe, that's what I'd like to experiment.
Richard Akingbehin is a British-Nigerian DJ and curator living in Berlin. His sets draw from the sonic innovations of Jamaican and UK sound system culture, using the heavy basslines and spatial effects of dub to guide his blend of house and techno. It creates an introspective spirit on the dancefloor, where a rolling groove, warm atmospherics and steady pace lock you in. This approach has brought Akingbehin to some of dance music's most exciting stages including Dekmantel, De School, Draaimolen, Organik and Panorama Bar.
By day, Akingbehin is co-founder of the Refuge Worldwide radio station. Since 2021, the platform has since helped shape Berlin’s music and arts scene with its focus on community building and diverse programming. Through Refuge, Akingbehin has worked as the Music Director for the Special Olympics World Games, as well as curating cultural programs for some of Europe’s leading clubs, festivals, conferences and galleries.
Akingbehin has also been running the Kynant Records label since 2015, releasing various styles of deep techno from artists like Cio d’Or, Donato Dozzy, Terrence Dixon or VRIL. These days, its output is firmly focused on the dubby style, with a landmark solo album from legendary Rhythm & Sound vocalist Paul St. Hilaire aka Tikiman - his first in almost 20 years - landing in 2023. Akingbehin and Tikiman are now close collaborators, both for the label and for duo performances.
